Expertise: Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) is a non-profit, non-denominational development agency that focuses on creative, equitable and sustainable solutions to poverty and related problems that impede social development in Asia and Africa. Established in 1980; 23 employees.
International Operations: International Operations: Design, implement and support initiatives in
Africa and Asia. AKFC is a member of the Aga Khan Development Network, a group of agencies involved in social, economic and cultural development spanning four continents.
Mandate: AKFC's initiatives focus on enhancing the quality of education, improving health care, increasing rural incomes and building strong, community-based organizations – with special attention to gender equity, protecting the environment and promoting small enterprise – in some of the poorest developing countries. It emphasizes innovation, effective management and careful evaluation, with the objective of finding "Smart Solutions" that can be used in many parts of the world. AKFC conducts its programs without regard to the faith, origin or gender of the individuals and communities it serves.Features:
· In Canada, AKFC acts as a catalyst for the discussion and understanding of critical global issues. It undertakes pioneering research and learning initiatives, links Canadian individual and institutional expertise with counterparts in the developing world and runs workshops and programs aimed at improving the quality of development policy and practice. It organizes the World Partnership Walk and World Partnership Golf, annual national events designed to raise funds and awareness for international development.
· AKFC is part of Aga Khan Foundation, established in Switzerland in 1967 by His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. In addition to Canada, AKF has units and affiliates in Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Portugal, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uganda, the United Kingdom and the United States.
