Expertise: Established in 1967 (founding colleges date back to 1871); 300 faculty, 900 staff, 7,000 students. Affiliated colleges: Menno Simons College, and Concord College.
Mandate: A publicly-funded post-secondary institution, the university provides a full range of undergraduate degree programs in the arts, sciences, education and theology, as well as some graduate programs and continuing education opportunities.
Features:
· The University of Winnipeg offers students real experience outside the classroom. Our focus is on undergraduate education, so undergraduate students are provided with a wide range of research and teaching roles that are reserved for graduate students at larger universities.
· We also offer joint applied programs in several areas (Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Developmental Studies, Biology, Administrative Studies and Communications) in conjunction with Red River College. These programs blend theory with practical experience. Students earn a degree and a diploma concurrently.
· The Collegiate at the University of Winnipeg is an independent high school (Grades 10-12) right on campus. Unique in Canada, it offers accelerated and concurrent programming that allows students to get a jump on university credits.
· Located in the centre of downtown Winnipeg, the university is an active participant in the downtown Winnipeg community. We maintain links with professional arts groups, offer free noon-hour concerts and lecture series, play an active role in core area initiatives, and provide security patrols that extend beyond our campus.
· The university sees community service as an integral part of our mandate. In fact, an award for excellence in community service is given annually to a university community member.
