Expertise: City of Iqaluit is the Capital of the Nunavut Territory. Nunavut became a separate territory on April 1st, 1999. Iqaluit was chosen as capital for Nunavut by plebiscite in 1995 and officially became the capital when the territory was formed. Iqaluit was awarded City status by the Government of Nunavut on April 19th, 2001. The population of Nunavut is approximately 27,000, of which 6,200 live in Iqaluit. Nunavut's population is the youngest in Canada with more than half under the age of 19; the Inuit make up 85% percent of the population. Iqaluit has a higher percentage of non-Inuit than most other small communities at about 40%.
