Expertise:
With pinnacle programs focusing on Canada's automotive sector, the environment and social justice, the University of Windsor is one of Ontario's leading education and research institutions. The University of Windsor provides "the degree that works," an innovative, experiential approach that prepares its graduates for the challenges of tomorrow.

Education at this site was established in 1857. Assumption College, which became Assumption University has a history of more than 100 years. The University of Windsor, a separate public institution, was founded in 1963.

Features:
The University of Windsor currently has more than 500 faculty and offers more than 120 academic programs. Located in the automotive capital of Canada separated only by a river from the giant American city of Detroit, and in the centre of the Great Lakes basin, the University of Windsor has leading programs related to the automotive sector, environmental research and management, and social justice.

The University of Windsor has established research and program partnerships with nearby American universities such as the University of Michigan (environmental), Wayne State (largest US medical school), University of Detroit Mercy (joint law program) and other US universities as far away as Minnesota and Ohio.

The Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research is located in a major research facility on the shore of the Detroit River, with state-of-the-art laboratories. Research teams have funding from Canadian and American sources to develop new knowledge on the flow of contaminants, the effects of contaminants on human health and ecosystems, the source and nature of exotic species, sediments, ecosystems, resource management, international law, administration and cooperation, and more.

The University of Windsor / DaimlerChrysler Canada Automotive Research and Development Centre is Canada's largest private research and development facility. Created through investments of more than $700 million, it is a university-owned, company operated R&D and education facility where industry engineers and technicians work alongside professors and students on concept vehicles and designs.

The University of Windsor also has partnership programs with Ford Motor Company and Nemak Inc., to advance the process of aluminum and other light metal casting operations for production. This and partnerships with General Motors and other manufacturers lead to the establishment of the federal network of centres of excellence in the automobile in Canada at the University of Windsor.

The University of Windsor has created a Centre for Social Justice and launched new graduate programs in Communication Studies and Sociology with a social justice focus.

For a university its size, the University of Windsor offers a unusually wide range of undergraduate programs ranging from engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, earth sciences and resource management, and computer science, to humanities such as dramatic art, visual arts, music, creative writing and literature, languages, classics, philosophy, history, political science and international relations, to professional programs such as business, nursing, law, social work and education, to social sciences such as anthropology, sociology, and psychology, to interdisciplinary programs such as labour studies, women's studies, environmental studies, forensics and multi-media majors.

Experience plays a large part in education at the University of Windsor. More than 10 percent of the students are in co-op programs. Many more are involved in work study and volunteer internships. The university aims to help students learn to manage their time, think critically, communicate effectively and utilize resources.
